With a population exceeding 1.3 million, Dallas is the third largest city in the state and the ninth largest in the country.
Dallas is economic center of the Dallas-Fort-Arlington metro area. The 2009 Census release showed of population of 6.3 million residents making it the number one metro area in grown the country last year. It also ranks as the largest metropolitan area in the state.
Founded in 1841 Dallas was incorporated as a city in 1856. The Dallas economy is primarily based on transportation, energy, computer technology, telecommunications, commerce and banking.
Inhabited by the Caddo Indian Tribe, the Dallas area was claimed in the 18th century as part of the Spanish Empire. France also claimed the area, but the Adams Onis Treaty made the Red River the boundary of New Spain, placing Dallas within Spanish territory. Remaining under Spanish rule until 1821, Mexico declared independence from Spain and the area was renamed Coahuila y Tejas. The Texas Republic was annexed by the US in 1845 and the county of Dallas was established a year later.
Anchored by the Downtown, Central Dallas is the center of the city and center of urban revival. Characterized by dense retail establishments and restaurants, Dallas has a variety of named districts, which include, West Village, City place, Turtle Creek, Oak Lawn, Victory Park, Uptown, which are considered “Hot spots” north of the Downtown.
South Dallas is predominantly a black community and, arguably, the poorest in Dallas. While Oak Cliff is is lower income region of the city, it remains fairly vibrant. South Dallas, on the other hand consists of boarded-up buildings and vacant lots.
